As I’ve explained when I’ve done this in the past, I left out the humor collection Hellboy Junior and the superhero-crossover collection Hellboy: Masks and Monstersbecause they’re not in continuity; arguably neither are the two Hellboy: Weird Talesvolumes but they’re at least in the spirit of the thing. I listed the original graphic novel hardcovers Hellboy: House of the Living Dead and Hellboy: The Midnight Circus as .5s rather than factoring them into the list proper primarily out of pique that they hadn’t been released in paperback yet, though that is now forthcoming with Hellboy in Mexico next April. I used the regular-edition trade paperbacks rather than the larger omnibus-style collections, though I refrained from noting the individual volume numbers within each series just for the sake of my sanity.

In een bij voorbaat tot mislukken gedoemde poging mijn aankopen binnen het Hellboy universum enigszins binnen de perken te houden dacht ik even van Sledgehammer en Frankenstein af te kunnen zien. Gelukkig deden enkele gewaardeerde niet nader genoemde forummers mij mijn dwaling inzien. Eerder al sprak ik mijn waardering over Sledgehammer uit. Inmiddels heb ik Frankenstein ook met veel genoegen gelezen.

I have to mention the elephant in the room. We’ve got Abe Sapien Dark and Terrible, B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth, and even Hellboy in Hell all ending next year. (Read the full the announcement in The Vulture’s interview with Mike Mignola here.)

MM: Yeah, Hellboy in Hell. I’m actually scripting issue nine right now and chomping at the bit to get on to issue ten, which will be the last issue. So, um, that’s a story that I think over the years I’ve said that it was a series that was going to go on forever, and at some point I started saying it was four books, because I’d plotted it out to four books, and then I replotted it so that it was three books, and then somewhere in the middle of The Hounds of Pluto I went “Huh. Things are moving much faster with a different tone than I expected. Is it possible to end this thing in two more issues?” And it turned out it was.

I let these things work at their own pace.

 

It feels almost on par for the course, what with the other two major books ending. Almost a little coincidental.

MM: Yeah, it is coincidental. I mean, again, Hellboy in Hell wasn’t supposed to end until just a few months ago I made this decision. The trick is keeping the other stuff going, and maybe shifting the focus. I think Witchfinder will, in the future, be coming out more often, hopefully.

 

Please do, because I love that series.

MM: Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. will keep going, hopefully. A lot of it comes down to finding the right artist for these books. And then, of course, the last arc of B.P.R.D., again, whenever the logistics work out for the artists on that book. I don’t think we have too big of a gap between Hell on Earth and the last B.P.R.D. arc.

Een iets ouder, maar interessant interview met Mignola. Blijkbaar was hij geen fan van de 2 Hellboy films die Del Toro maakte.

Were you able to enjoy the second film objectively as a fan?

No. I can't enjoy either one as a fan because I was there. To me, they're like home movies. I was on the set so much for them that you look at them and say, "oh, it was cold as shit that day" or "that was the third take and the second take was better." And with the second one, there was just so much shit that he did that I begged him not to that it's really difficult for me to watch the second one.

He's obviously a great director, but it's still hard for you to divorce the films from your creation.

Yeah. At some point, part of it is easy because it bears so little resemblance to your work that you kind of forget that it's Hellboy. At least for me. And also with the second movie, we had come up with an idea for it, which is radically different from what he ended up doing. So part of me can still see the movie that we were going to do, which was much darker and much more supernatural and not as broad-humor as the second ended up being.

But he's great and people love that movie, and I'm just too close to it.

Ondertussen verder bezig met het wegwerken van mijn Hellboy/BPRD achterstand. Net besteld:

 

BPRD: Plague of Frogs 3 en 4

Hellboy 4

Witchfinder 1

 

Ik had de afgelopen jaren hier en daar al wel een Hellboy trade opgepikt, maar hiermee heb ik eindelijk alls gekocht wat ik jaren geleden via de stripbib heb gelezen (+ nog wat extra :e002: ).

 

Gisteren BPRD: Plague of Frog 1 herlezen en begonnen met BPRD: Plague of Frogs 2. Fantastische reeks.

 

De bedoeling is om op de eerstvolgende FACTS mijn achterstand nog wat verder weg te werken.

Tot nu toe Hellboy 1-5 en BPRD Plague of Frogs 1 en 2 her- en gelezen. Fantastische reeks, maar momenteel lukt het me enkel om in kleine stukjes te lezen en moet ik me haasten om toch maar dat hoofdstukje uitgelezen te krijgen (want ik wil dan niet stoppen halverwege). Hatelijk is het. Ik ga even een pauze inlassen tot ik wat meer tijd heb om rustig door te lezen. Binnenkort is het krokus vakantie en heb ik verlof. Hopelijk lukt het dan.
